I Rewatched Jane the Virgin, So You Don’t Have To
And, okay, it's pretty good
Picture this: it’s 11 p.m., you have a million things still on your to-do list for today, and instead of accomplishing them, you are rewatching Jane the Virgin on Netflix. Yep, you guessed it — that was me last night.
After rewatching the entire first season in about four days, I have some thoughts.
Why can’t all Soap Operas be like this?
Although Jane the Virgin isn’t an actual soap opera, it is set up to have all of the troupes of one. More specifically, the show is in many ways a self-aware satire of telenovelas- a drama series similar to a soap opera that is usually produced in Latin America.
The show has all of the crazy twists and turns that you would expect from your cheesy daytime television shows, except it is so much better. The actors transform any “cheesy” or “over-dramatized” plot into something that holds you on the edge of your seat.
The show is also pretty self-aware. Any of these predictable plot lines are often commented on by the narrator. So, instead of having their viewers comment on these troupes, the show does it first. Pretty smart writing, if you ask me.

As the main storyline is based on a Hispanic family living in Miami, you can imagine that the characters speak Spanish a bit. Whenever these scenes come along, I absolutely love it. I feel like I am brushing up a bit on my Spanish skills, (which admittedly aren’t great), all while watching a show. Talk about multi-tasking right?
The Love Triangle
I love a good love triangle, okay? I was a young girl when Twilight was at its peak, so trust me, love triangles have a special place in my heart. I love the drama. I love love. So, I am a bit sold on the fact that this one has a semi-realistic love triangle between characters that I absolutely adore. So, I’m all in. And I’m also taking a side, (which I won’t discuss here because it would spoil the show for you).
Overall
The first season of Jane the Virgin is spectacular. There are so many twists and turns that honestly will keep you guessing, despite them being pretty predictable. I also love the focus being on a minority family so that we get to understand a different culture and language. The cast and overall self-awareness of the shows crazy plotlines keep you insatiable. Need I say more?
